Early childhood classes are available for children aged nine months to two-years-old.
Young Toddlers

Social development, through adult interaction and small group activities
Creative expression, through sensory experiences
Children in this class must be 9 months old by September 1. Teacher/pupil ratio is 2 adults to 6 children.

Toddlers and Twos

A secure, caring environment helps each child enjoy new concepts and experiences. Although children this age mainly engage in parallel play, an opportunity for socialization and group awareness is provided.
Activities are appropriate to their rapidly developing physical, language, and cognitive skills, including:
Art and music activities
Fine motor and gross activities
Emphasis on self-help skills, such as washing hands and opening lunches
Outdoor and indoor play
Reading and puppetry
Creative movement games
Teacher-to-pupil ratio is 2 adults to 10 children.

Pre School Programs

Preschool classes are available for three and four year olds.
Threes and Fours
Preschoolers are becoming aware of the world around them. They are capable of self-directed activities and can participate in group activities. Emphasis is on the development of the individual child as he/she operates in a group.
Preschool classrooms are set up as learning centers in which children make choices and work together. In this environment, the teacher is a facilitator who encourages child-centered activities, including:

Hands-on problem solving and exploration at learning centers
Music, songs, dramatic play, and puppetry
Reading and storytelling
Increased group participation and games
Art, science, and math activities
Self-help skills, including hand-washing, opening lunches, table manners, bathroom skills, and putting on and zipping coats
Teachers plan curriculum around central themes, such as seasons, family, and the world. Teacher-pupil ratio is 1 adult to 10 children.

School-Age Programs

New Haven Day School offers before and after school child care for Carnegie Elementary students. Children are supervised in a group setting and enjoy free play, fitness games, homework time, and arts and crafts. A snack is served in the afternoon.

Schedule
Hours are from 7:30 to 8:30 in the morning and from 3:30 to 5:30 in the afternoon. Children may enroll for three or five days per week.
Transportation
Transportation via van is available. However, staff members walk the children to and from Carnegie when the weather permits. New Haven Day School makes no supervisory or transportation arrangements for public school extracurricular activities. Please let us know if your child is involved in after-school activities such as Scouts, crossing guard, sports, etc., so staff members will not look for them after school.
School Calendar
The Extended Child Care program follows the Carnegie schedule for holidays with one exception: conference days. Carnegie holds two conference days per year. These conference days are included in your regular tuition and New Haven will be in session on conference days. Your child can spend the entire day at New Haven (7:30 A.M. to 5:30 P.M.).
New Haven does not hold school on Carnegie professional days.
